1. Identify a thesis topic and supervisor
Before taking any administrative steps, it is essential to:
- Choose a thesis topic proposed by ED GRNE or in collaboration with a partner laboratory.
- Contact a research supervisor in one of the host teams associated with ED GRNE to discuss the project and obtain his/her agreement.

2. Preparing your application
Once your application has been accepted for a thesis project by the project leader, you must submit your application in the Adum management tool: Projets doctoraux 2025 /Accès à l'espace candidature :

- A detailed CV highlighting your academic background and relevant experience.
- A letter of recommendation from your Master 2 internship supervisor (or equivalent).
- A letter of support from your thesis advisor.
- A letter of motivation from the Master 2 internship supervisor (or equivalent), explaining your interest in the thesis subject and your professional objectives.
- Your transcripts and diplomas.
- A letter from the thesis project manager.
ED GRNE will examine the application file to assess the feasibility and relevance of the doctoral project.
3. Duration of PhD
- Standard duration: Generally, a doctorate takes three years of full-time equivalent research time.
- Extensions: the duration can be extended to six years, subject to appropriate justification and funding.

Admission requirements :
Once your application has been accepted, you will need to complete your administrative registration in the Adum management tool:
- You must hold a national master's degree or a degree conferring the grade of master, or provide proof of professional experience establishing your aptitude for research.
- You must have a means of funding for three years from the date of your first registration. This funding may come from various sources, including doctoral contracts, grants or other means of financing.
- Training agreement: This must be signed by you, your thesis supervisor and, if applicable, the host institution or organization.
- It specifies the thesis subject, the research timetable, the supervision arrangements, the training program, the objectives for valorizing the work, and the material conditions for carrying out the research project.
Registration is definitive once the supporting documents have been validated and the registration fees have been paid.
5. Rights and duties
The rights and duties of doctoral students, along with the reciprocal commitments of the parties involved, are outlined in the Doctoral Charter. This charter must be communicated to all researchers, teacher-researchers, doctoral schools, and doctoral students. It is signed by all parties at the conclusion of the admissions process, prior to the first PhD registration.

- Role: To ensure that your course of study progresses smoothly, in accordance with the doctoral charter and the training agreement.
- Meetings: These are mandatory and occur in three stages prior to each new enrolment: presentation of work progress, an interview with the doctoral student without the thesis supervisor, and an interview with the thesis supervisor without the doctoral student.
8. Follow-up and training during the thesis
Throughout your doctorate, you will:
- Participate in 90 hours of cross-disciplinary and cross-functional training.
- Draw up an Individual Training Plan (PIF) in consultation with your thesis supervisor and the Director of ED GRNE.

At the end of the doctoral program, the doctoral student must defend his or her thesis before a jury to obtain the doctoral diploma. The defense is the culmination of the research work and marks the end of the doctoral program.
